RHOA Annual Meeting Concludes Successful Year

The Reservation HOA wrapped up a successful 2011 with its recent Annual Meeting, which included a "State of the HOA" presentation by President Darrell Day and a presentation by Richardson Mayor Bob Townsend on capital improvements.

RHOA Treasurer Justin McMillin reported that the Association was in a solid financial position after record membership contributions and donations in 2011. Day outlined to members that RHOA membership had increased to an all-time record 483, with more than a fourfold increase over the past three years. The organization recognized Environment Chair Diana Stein as 2011 "Volunteer of the Year" for her work on behalf of neighborhood beautification and as Block Captain of Mohawk Trail, which recorded 100% RHOA membership. Volunteers Tom Courtney, Jessica Pillsbury, Kristie Wyman, Heather Wheat, Crime Watch Patrol members and Block Captains were also recognized.

Brad Moulton gave a presentation on a campaign to improve neighborhood aesthetics that includes a Beautification Matching Fund collaboration with the City of Richardson for improving the look of Arapaho Road. Bill McCalpin gave a presentation on the effort to improve the retaining wall along Coit, which is dependent on City funding, and also gave an outline of the City's study of storm water drainage in the neighborhood.

Day is stepping down after three years as President of the RHOA, and received a standing ovation from members for his years of service. The Association elected 2012 Officers: Richard Morrow as President, Duff Bourassa as Vice President, Sol Stein as Treasurer, Adam Wilson as Communications Director and Rebecca Pillsbury as Events Director.

Group plans community garden at Mohawk

A group of parents wants to plant a community garden on the campus of Mohawk Elementary School. The mission of the Mohawk Elementary Gardens is to educate, enrich, and inspire the lives of our students.

The group feels that it is supremely important to learn from and experience the outdoors. Through direct, hands-on work, the gardens will provide an experiential education that helps children increase their understanding of science and their connection to nature. By tending crops and sharing in the basic responsibilities of the garden, students learn about our world’s intricate ecosystems and observe science in action. Students also learn how vegetables are grown and experience the joy of overcoming the day-to-day difficulties in producing food.

The garden will also provide opportunities for the extended community at large to support the children through shared contributions in service and financial support.

Donations can be made to the school and would be greatly appreciated to help purchase a rain-harvesting system, seeds, soil, shovels, and other garden supplies.

For more information, email sandstony@sbcglobal.net or vist the group’s Facebook page.
